Should I use 1 John 4 as a guideline in deciding whether or not to follow a cult leader?

If it's good enough for John and the other disciples, it is good enough for Christians today. It is a guideline for us so that we might test the doctrine of someone who calls him/herself a Christian and proposed some sort of truth. We can discren by the Spirit of God whether it is true or not.
