What is proper etiquette for a reception a year after the wedding?

My hubby & I couldn't afford to do much last year when we tied the knot, so we did the courthouse route, now a year later we are wanting to celebrate and do something to include our firends and family. Is it improper to have a reception so late? What would be proper wording on the invites? Gifts or no gifts?
